Bought A Pony Few Months Ago. Owners Gave Us nothing?
Hello ![]()
I bought a pony a few months ago from a lady south from us. Hes for doing BSJA and mainly show jumping.
So when i rode him to try him out he had very nice tack and loads of rugs.
However a freind of ours went to pick him up. They didnt even give him a headcollar to travel in !!!
We got an old saddle which was ripped and all the padding lost (i rode him in a different one when we went to try him). An old ripped saddle cloth. An old bridle which didnt even fit. No tendon boots that we rode in the frist time.
And ONE rug. This was in the middle of winter and i had ONE rug!? and all my other horses rugs were way to big so i had to go out and buy a load of extra stuff for him and he wasnt exactly cheap himseld!
she might of kept the other stuff for her other horses i understand that but her other horses were 16hh upwards.
And this pony is 14.2hh! I just dont undertsnad why they didnt even give us the option to maybe BUY the jumping saddle or buy the tendon boots or anything like that?
When ive sold horses in the past ive made sure they have everything they need with the horse.
So now his saddle is really bad i was wondering if i should maybe give them a call to maybe ask if there was anyway i could buy that saddle of them.
What would you do in this situation?
thankyou x

unless the law has changed the seller is only obliged to sell the horse with headcollar and lead rope. They probably were keeping their tack for another horse and any other equipment would be extra. The fact that you prefer to sell ‘complete’ is your business and not the norm If you can afford to purchase a horse you should have ensured you could afford to equip him with everything he needs too.
Normally when people are intending on giving you stuff they advertise it. People very rarely give things on when selling horses. They probably have other horses the stuff will fit. My instructors sell horses and they never even pass on a rug or anything, when I bought my horse last year my instructor said she’d let me use the doona for the rest of winter but I had to buy my own rugs and everything from scratch and my horse wasn’t cheap either. Looking around at ads some of them say at the bottom ‘comes with winter rugs and bridle’ but not many of them do. If I sold my horse now I wouldn’t pass anything except for maybe a few rugs but that’s only because I care about him so he’d be warm at his new home.
You should have found out if he came with anything before you bought him.
Unless it says in the advertisement she was going to give you anything- i don’t thing she was in the wrong not too. I guess she would have expected the owner to buy and bring along a headcoller. maybe she was keeping the tack for another pony she was getting. Of course no one can give you an accurate answer. You could ring and ask if the saddle is for sale- but if not just ask for the measurement of his tack and buy new stuff.
You could call and ask if you could purchase the equipment that they used on him-the worst that can happen is the people say no
It’s normal for a pony to come with absolutely nothing – I have on numerous occasions bought and sold ponies with nothing but the shoes on their feet and I do take a headcollar to pick up a new pony! Unless the advert expressly states, “tack and rugs included” or “tack may be available by separate negotiation” you cannot assume that you will be getting valuable add-ons when you buy a pony. A decent saddle, bridle and a couple of rugs will set you back £1000+ – not many people are going to throw that in as part of the sale. If you do that’s your headache but it is certainly not the norm.
By all means give them a phone and see if you can buy the saddle from them, or ask for the make, model and size of the saddle they had on him but you may be just as well getting a saddler to have a look at him and that way you’ll know that the saddle you buy definitely fits and you will of course have more options buying from a saddler.
And get his back looked at – if you’ve been riding him in a dodgy old saddle he may be feeling quite uncomfortable!
If you’ve been giving stuff with the horses you sell then you are very nice. I’ve never heard of anyone just giving the stuff away unless they first state it. In fact at some of the sales here (I know its different just saying) You must bring your own halter I guess I wouldn’t have gone to pick up a horse without one it kind of made you look a tad inexperienced.
Well time to buckle down and save your Penny’s… But before you bought the horse didn’t you do research into what the things cost?? Or did you just assume that it would come with the horses? If you did then go to those places you found items at you wanted and purchase them there the cost of the money will pay of in the long run.
You seem morally outraged. Unfortunately, you’re wrong. When you negotiated the price for the pony, did anyone even mention the tack? If not, why would they throw in “very nice tack and loads of rugs” for free? That stuff probably cost them thousands! Just because it won’t fit their current horses doesn’t mean they won’t be buying a pony in the future, or simply selling the equipment for a profit, or even giving it away to a family member or friend. If the tack never made it into the negotiations, you’re lucky they threw in the free rug! And just fyi, I think it’s extremely rude to ASSUME that someone is going to give you so much as the head collar and lead rope. It’s like if you were selling your car and the buyer expected you to leave all your cd’s in it.
Ridiculous!
Wee Trojan has it right, it is law that if you sell a horse then you must provide a halter and rope for them to lead it away. This could just be a piece of baler twine fashioned into a halter but as long as the animal leads in it it will legally do.
As for the rest of his gear, you should have negotiated on buying him not just expected it unless it was in the advertisement that tack went with him.
Caveat Emptor – buyer beware.
Well they should’ve at least have given you a halter! EVERY horse I’ve gotten has come with a halter. You could call them and ask but who knows maybe they want to keep it for another pony down the road someday??
When you buy a horse you buy a horse. You do not get so much as a halter in addition unless that is stated in the ad. Sorry but that is how it is.
You may call her up and see if she has one for sale. I have sold saddles like that in the past.
I would (and did) shop around for tack that I wanted to use instead of worrying about what they were using before. I fit my horse’s tack exactly to me and to her and everyone is happy!
