what temp does it get down to at night, is the horse stabled at night ?, is it clipped ?
all of there are very relvant. Our big Appy who is clipped gets 4 rugs(cotton, polar fleece, wool, heavy canvas) as she is in a paddock, its gets down to 5 degree’s and she feels the
cold.
on the other side, our pally is a hairy beast over winter(welsh somewhere in her past!!) and only has a cotton and a lined 1200 denier synthetic on ..
regarding hay, I bought 25kg bales up on the NSW central coast that come in from Adelaide for $14 a bale yesterday
Hey
If your horse has got his winter woolly coat he should only need 2 rugs… his day rug then a thick at least 300g filled synthetic rug. (lined canvas is ok too)
But if he has been clipped or rugged so he hasnt got lots of hair… he will need a few rugs, my tb has a fleecie, a day rug, and a heavy 300 g fill synthetic… and he’s just warm enough, if the temp gets any cooler he will get another medium weight rug underneith as he was rugged from the first cold night and has little winter coat growth… as for lucerne hay on the mornington penisula… it will depend on whats left… you can only grow lucern in summer and if stocks are low the price will be high… about $25-$30 a bale… if there is still plenty around it will be down aroun $15 – $20… i dont know of any cheach feed places… as cheap feed is usally poorer quality… unfortunatly with horse feed you get what you pay for and its just better to spend the extra money and feed up properly…
hope that helps, best wishes
