Sheet/Rug/Blanket sizing? already asked this but.still confused?
i need to buy a new one, and they said take a tape meauser from the chest to the ****…i did and got 57 but he wears a 76!!!
i need to find one for my other horses and any one is good, i dont care if its heavy or lightwieght…just something to cover them for the winter…. {the basic reason we blanket them is to keep them clean when we cant bathe them, plus some of the horses are getting old!}
please explain EXACTLY how to size them and a good/cheap brand for blanket/rug/sheet and maybe a websitte to chek them out!

The tape is placed in the middle of his front end [chest], wrap it around to the side, then around to the middle of the tail and see if you get a bigger number. You want the part of his chest right under where his neck ties in. The sheet looks okay. I get canvas rugs at a flea market held every fall for about 20 bux each. Nothing fancy, but good and warm with a blanket wool lining. I don’t mind when a horse has a snack attack in a cheaper blanket and eats the whole thing but the buckles. For older horse, a layering system is something they enjoy… a blanket liner, a waterproof sheet and a heavy quiltie. We feel the horse and add or subtract layers based on his relative body heat. You don’t want them to feel sweaty or chilled.
This link gives you a good illustration on how to measure.
Middle of the chest, down the side and to the middle of the tail. Schnieders tack has some nice blankets and sheets and most are on sale right now. Their website is
Ok so I took a few pics of my horse and used paint to show where to start and end on measuring. hope these help
this would be considered the starting point
2nd step
and ending point
It’s easy to explain as most people below have done, but I thought it might also help seeing an example. Sorry it’s 2 different horses pictured. The 1st pic and last pic are my appy Biscuit , the 2nd is my QH Big Girl .. apparently (and I didn’t realize this until I went to do this lil example) I don’t have any good side shots of my gelding , vise versa on the mare…. lol
The measurement is from the MIDDLE of the chest to around the Middle of the tail, around the largest points (like around the point of shoulder to around the point of the **** to the center of the tail)
measure from the center of the chest to the center of the **** ***** and add five inches. You want it to fit loose and not tight because it will rub him raw. A sheet is not warm.
I believe in buying the best you can afford . I bought really good ones , top of the line , and after 8 years—yes , 8 years, i only have a couple broken threads. My horses are out every day for at least 12 hours a day rain or shine and use these blankets alot in season. I live in the north so we get wicked winters. I see people that have to buy a new blanket every year and when you add them up , I could have bought several.
I only use cheap blankets when mine are getting cleaned or they got too muddy from them rolling and didnt dry out. But that is rare.
