Where can I get cheaper tack in Melbourne, Australia?
I know I am ready for a horse and my parents agree but I’m just trying to get a thorough plan sorted out. My parents are divorced so it’s a half and half situation but I’m trying to find things at cheaper prices because soon after I get my own, we may have to get another for my younger sisters (also very horsey).
The agistment place is only $90 a month maximum including food, I have a shortlist of ads and my friend breeds and trains so that isn’t a problem either. The question I have, does anyone know where I can save on tack, rugs, supplies etc in my area? I was told to go to the market for saddles because instead of three hundred dollars they are one hundred but I don’t exactly trust market people.
Please don’t be nasty towards my information above, an informative guess is a good one…
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Do you have a Boylans or another produce store like that around because they usually have some cheap things, also have a look in mags and local newspaper or trading post.
umm to get cheap saddles gobto your local horseland store and see if they have any 2nd hand saddles, i got a 2nd hand saddle for my first saddle because my horse cost alot of money.
also for rugs and stuff go onto and they always ave some good brand new horse acceceries on there for cheap, and alot of the stuff on there is brand new.
my parents are divorced as well,
and mum does most of the paying for my horse.
just remember and keep in mind the farrier bills, the vet bills, quarterly worming, and all the other fees that come with owning a horse, you may think that your horse wont need to be attended to by the vet but it will happen one day and you need to be ready to pay the cost, even if you do end up haveing to put your horse down in some cases like my friend,
hope that helped, if you need any more info just contact me on yahoo an di will be sure tom right bak as i also live in australia
Try sites like ebay, and petlink.com.au. There are also Australian horse forums that you can browse (just google them) and there are often people selling second hand items on their stud pages.
Horseland do sell second hand saddles, and you can also check the trading post and your local newspaper classified ads. You don’t have to worry too much about getting stuffed around with tack – so long as you know what you’re looking for. There is plenty of information on the net about styles of bridles and saddles (eg- western/english), and you just need to make sure you get the right sizes for the horse you get (bridles come in warmblood, full, cob and pony, saddles are measured by the inch – you’d just have to sit in one. Rugs are measured in feet, so you would have to measure your horse to ascertain the size you needed).
Basically you just have to shop around. It’s arguably the best part of owning a horse, so long as you’re not looking for something you’re desperately in need of.
Good luck.
oh markets are great places
=D my instructor sells and buys her tack from the markets and they are bloody cheap and great quailty saddles or you can go to pony clubs and advitise for a second hand one or horse deals to tell if a saddle is a dud its pretty easy you go in with a open mind and look at every bit of the saddle its a good idear to bring someone who knows wat there looking at
i know market peaple arnt the best but if you know wat to look for you get a good deal a bridle and bit is best brought brand new rugs you can get cheap on sale or go around to horse palces and c if they have old rugs for sale pony clubs have swap meets
um horse land somtimes have a brand new set with grith stirrups etc as a set wich is the best opsyion
and thats around 300 and insted of just buying the saddle u get a set so the tack would cost u around 400 including bridle and bit and thats cheap and the saddle is fitted much better to the horse =]
Don’t you have a second hand tack store in your area?
We have a few here in Perth.
Why not head into Horseland or Europa and ask them, they should definitely know (unless they’re stingy buggers and want you to buy untouched stuff!)
Another way is to have a look in the news papers.
Have you been to Horseland? They have pretty good synthetic wintec saddles for pretty cheap.
Usually when you buy a horse (already trained) they can sometimes be nice enough to give you his tack at only a little extra.
However, if you do need to buy a saddle, remember to get a qualified saddle fitter in to fit your saddle perfectly to your horse. Especially if it’s second hand, it would have been fit to a horse of different shape.
Hope this helps =)
