Of course you can! Just be aware that 2 blanckets may cause rub burn so be sure to check his shoulders often. If rubbing does occur make sure that the blanket isn’t too lose or to tight on all the areas, then apply some vaseline (petroleum jelly) and buy ‘jammies’ they are like spandex for us and prevent further rubbing :)

buy a nice warm underug to go under another cover to keep him warmer, you probly dont want to put him in his turnout rug, chances are he’ll rip it on a fence, get it covered in mud etc.keep that rug for shows.

Yes you can. I live in the UK & I have an Arab & when it gets really wet & cold over here i quite oftern put him out in 2 rugs. Ensure you put his stable rug on 1st then his turnout rug on top. It’s not ideal putting them out in stable rugs because they are not made to be outside but it will keep them warm, until you are able to get him another turnout rug. Just ensure that your horse doesn’t get too hot & sweety. Hope this helps? x

if it were me i’d go buy a heavier blanket as soon as possible!

you live in canada so what what have you been doing for your horse before??

  • Susan says:

Yes especially if the turnout is breathable that’s fine. As in other answer above be care full of rubs at the shoulders and the withers as pressure when rugs are doubled up can get quite heavy there. Is your horse outside? If he is in a stable we used to put woolen blankets or a duvet on underneath the stable rug. These can move about during the night and need surcingles. To put the duvet on on lay it over the horses back first one end level with the tail. The other end falls right up the neck. Make a fold from each edge like an envelope over lapping at the girth leaving a point at his ears. Then put on your stable rug as you do normally and fold down the point of the duvet to where the surcingle will catch it further down at the girth. Does this make sense? Hope so it may save you buying more rugs.

*** Edit Sorry this won’t work while he is turned out for the night just if you want to dry the turnout and he is in.

Lots of folks do this this…I’ve doubled up on blankets and have not had a problem..

  • devilsadvocaat22 says:

Yes you can, more layers is better.
I’m in the UK and my “old man” currently has a vest ( to stop rug rub) a stable rug and a full neck turnout rug and he’s still struggling to keep weight on.

  • sonny says:

sure you can i do it all the time.

  • foxygeeb says:

Sure can… i double rug all the time in winter… my horse wears his medium weight rug during the day… then at night i just pop the heavy over the top to keep him toastie warm over night… double rugging is very common… and the horse will thank you… just make sure you check him in the morning because if he has had a roll the rugs can get all twisted and tangled with each other… good luck and i hope he stays warm… :)

  • NarutoGirl says:

Ya you could do that but be careful with your horses skin.

  • troll eating mule says:

Yup you can, it will be fine.

  • Debi says:

No problem, if he’s not warm enough just add another rug, extra layers trap air and insulate better anyway. I know someone who’s horse is currently wearing 3 rugs ( mind you he is a wuss – the horse I mean !)

Hi there, yes you can put 2 blankets on your horse at the same time. But beware, If they are too heavy he will try and remove them. Or even if he gets too hot. Remember, horses have different body temperature to humans. So what we think is cold isn’t always to our horses. Plus horses tend to use mud from dams etc to keep warm as when mud dries its like insulation to them.
