blankets?

i don’t know what kind of blanket to get my horse. i want to get him a turnout because i know that he will be going out side with other horses and he lays down a lot and he’s old. so i wanted something that would alow him to move freely, but i can’t find any turnouts that i like the fit. i can find stable blankets though. would it be ok to get him a stable blanket???? or should i just look even more for a turnout???

Stable blankets are going to be less ‘fitting’ than a turnout.
A stable blanket is designed for just that – a stabled horse, in a stall, that doesn’t have a whole lot of freedom of movement to begin with.
They usually don’t have leg gussets to free up the shoulder and they’re most often not waterproof.
What is it about the fit of the others you don’t like? Maybe you just need to re-measure your horse and make sure you’re buying a turn out that is the appropriate size.

ok i have a few websites for you that have stable blankets and turn out blankets. (used tack)

I hope this helps. and if I were you I would get him a turnout blanket that was made to be outside.

I would not use a stable blanket unless you coat it 2 or 3 times on the outside with Thompson’s Water Seal. Blankets will absorb water which can put your horse in danger of contracting pneumonia. Turnouts are water repellent. I’d keep looking. Try a Weatherbeta or Bucca blanket – I’ve had good luck with both of these turnouts for durability and water replant qualities.

hi! if its a old horse he’ll defo need a some thing warm for winter. have you tryed a new zealand rug or a chaskit they should be fine or any other rug really…. but the two i mentioned should last. a stable rug won’t do the job for him in winter espcially if he’s a old boy/girl. have you got the robinsons cataloge? you can get it online its great and very well priced.

I have horses that wear their turn-out blankets 24/7 during the winter, and the blankets that I bought for them are by Weaver. They are durable, I tell you what. Two winters, and not a rip or missing stitch on them. My mom had bought one from Polar, and first winter it got shredded. The Weaver blankets also fit my Quarter Horses great, I haven’t found a brand that fits like Weaver.

I would recomend a turnout blanket for outside play and turnout with at least 600 denier durability, and for turnout rug make sur eit is waterproof.A stable blanket will soak up the moisture and will be soaked on your horse.
A stable blanket would be good for inside the barn only.

stable blankets wont let him move freely

It depends where you live, but usually in the winter anywhere its either rainign or snowing, so to keep him warm and dry go with a waterproof turnout. The stable blanket will more than likely not be waterproof and it will defeat the purpose of putting a blanket on at all.

You definitely need a turnout, not a stable blanket. I’ve found Schneiders sstack.com to have very high quality. If you can buy something 1200 denier or higher to avoid rips. Right now sstack.com has Duratech Viking II Turnouts on sale for only $57.95 plus s&h. I’m also looking into Hug blankets see equusunlimited.com because they are supposed to have excellent fit and are fully adjustable. Make sure you measure correctly; from the middle of the chest to mid tail to get the right size.

We use Gore-Tex Turnout rugs & so far we have been happy with them. They seem to have lasted well over the last few years. We generally only use them in the spring. We stall the horses during the winter & they are blanketed & hooded then…

I guess I should include that the gore-tex are guaranteed 100% waterproof, windproof & breathable. Not sure where we got them though. My husband seems to think it was from DOVER SADDLERY??
