Horse blankets? Help?
I have two horses a mare and foal. I’ve always been under the impression that you shouldn’t use blankets on horses that have a full winter coat because it lays down the hairs and causes the horse to become colder than it would be without a blanket.
But It has been raining and its getting cold and windy which makes horses cold whether they have a coat or not. They are in a pasture that only has tree lines for weather protection and I’d like them both to stay extra comfy since last year the mare was in a stall.
They will be out in the pasture so im looking for waterproof obviously. But blankets come in every style imagineable so im starting to get confused.
What kind of blanket should I get for my mare? With what extra add ons? Do I need snuggies? A blanket liner?
Ive been looking for foal blankets but they are all stable blankets and are not waterproof. so what do I do? hes 4 months old so I would like to have one that “grows” with him. Ive seen some blankets that expand. Id like one like this since I dont have a lot of money and dont want to spend $50.00 every two weeks because he grows like a weed. Like when I splurged on a nice halter and lead set and he grew out of it in 3 days. ugh!!!
Any help would be great. What do you guys do for your horses in the winter?

Weatherbeeta makes some really great blankets for pretty resonable prices. I would look into the high neck freestyle type blankets. Those are great for keeping the rain from getting under the blankets. If they are out all the time, a med. weight and a heavy weight blanket would be good to have. Or a waterproof sheet. Then you can buy layers to go underneath the sheet. Orican or Landas are really great weatherbeeta styles.
As for the baby, weatherbeeta does have turnout foal blankets. They are pretty great. I bought one for my filly this year. They do grow quick, but if you were to buy the blanket a size or two bigger, that may work. Kensington and Stateline Tack have some expandable turnout (waterproof) foal and weanling size blankets. I have used them before and they work great. I would go for a medium-heavy weight blanket. Babys get cold easy.
Go on Horse.com or Jeffersequine.com for more info on some blankets. They have some of the best prices for those types of blankets. Statelinetack.com also has some pretty good deals.
I hope that I could have helped. Good luck!
Well i dont know much about the rugs/blankets as i am 14, but in winter my horse can’t have two rugs on, so we just put her very very thick rug on her (without a neck bit) And she’s fine. But i suggest one with a neck bit
